John Muir was born on April 21, 1838 in Scotland.  When Muir was eleven, his family immigrated to the United States.  A bright boy who loved nature, he even tinkered with some inventions.  One of his inventions included a device that tipped him out of bed before the morning sunrise.  After attending three years at the University of Wisconsin, John set out to feed his curiosity of the natural world.  He started traveling and exploring the Northern United States and Canada.  At one point in his life, Muir walked from Indiana to the Gulf of Mexico.  In all of his exploring all over the world, the place that impressed him the most was the Sierra Nevada.  He said that it should be called the "Range of Light" because of its astounding beauty.  John Muir went on to continue to study nature and along the way write many articles and books dealing with nature.  Perhaps his greatest contribution was the jump start of the United States' National Park System.  He is a main reason why congress created Yosemite National Park.  He also is a contributor to several other parks including the Grand Canyon national park.  Muir is sometimes referred to as the "Father of Our National Park System."
